Lauren Zimmerman Speaks on Book Banning at Human Rights Campaign Women LEAD Summit

Partner Lauren Zimmerman gave a presentation titled “A Look at the Fight Against Book Censorship Through My Experience Litigating ‘And Tango Makes Three’” at the 2024 Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Women LEAD Summit in Los Angeles, California.

In this TED-style talk, Lauren discussed the First Amendment case she is currently litigating that involves the removal and restriction in multiple Florida school districts of And Tango Makes Three, a widely lauded children’s book that conveys that same-sex relationships and families with same-sex parents exist; that they can be happy, healthy, and loving; and that same-sex parents can adopt and raise healthy children. Lauren framed this case in the larger context of increasing instances of book banning in the United States, and ongoing national debates and legal arguments surrounding censorship, education, and free speech.

The Human Rights Campaign is an American LGBTQ+ advocacy group dedicated to protecting and expanding rights for LGBTQ+ individuals. The Women LEAD initiative strives to elevate the impact of women and nonbinary people within HRC.
