Marquis earned his J.D. from Columbia Law School, where he was the managing director of A Jailhouse Lawyer's Manual and staffer for the Columbia Human Rights Law Review

While in law school, Marquis was a student attorney at Immigrants Rights' Clinic and a summer associate at Selendy Gay. He was also a law clerk for the Charleston County Public Defender's Office.
